Our 1st meeting of the 3rd quarter of 2022 WILL NOT be held on the usual 3rd Saturday (7-16) due to the Deathride taking place that day.
Instead, the meeting will be held on Saturday, July 23rd. It will be in-person (at the Markleeville Library) and via Zoom. The meeting starts at 8:30 a.m.
Our Annual Meeting will take place on Saturday, August 6th and it will take place at the Alpine County Administration Building Board Room (99 Water St., Markleeville) in-person and via Zoom. The meeting starts at 10:00 a.m.
Agendas for both meetings, as well as previous meeting minutes, operations reports, financials, and Consumer Confidence Reports can all be found on our Important Documents page so feel free to do whatever homework you need to in advance of these meetings.
While participation of members and qualified persons is always encouraged at any meeting, IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT at the Annual Meeting where a quorum of members (approx. 40) is needed in order for elections to be held on that date. Other important business also calls for a quorum.
Attending that meeting either in-person or virtually would help us eliminate having to send a lot of materials, and ballots, via mail, and would also make the meeting more productive for everyone.

Instead of our typical “3rd Saturday” meeting, the May meeting will be held on Wednesday night, May 18th, starting at 5:30 p.m.
This special call meeting will be shorter (typically an hour or less) than our quarterly board meetings, and held via Zoom only, but please fire up your computer or phone.
We’d love to have you participate!
Our hope is that a weekday night meeting will give folks that cannot attend on a Saturday a chance to join in and learn about what’s happening with local water production, restoration efforts, and more.

At the quarterly board meeting last Saturday, the Board of Directors updated the rules and guidelines.
Effective today, the restrictions that were in place post-Tamarack Fire have been rolled back.

A couple items of note:
It’s likely, based on drought predictions for CA, that more restrictive rules and guidelines will need to be put in place.
We will make that determination at the June meeting, and encourage your attendance at that meeting, as well as all meetings.

While we will be discussing water conservation measures moving forward we want to remind you that last year’s landscape watering guidelines, as part of the Fire Related Mandatory Conservation Plan, remain in effect.

For three days starting on Wednesday, March 23rd, the six remaining bags of grass left over from last fall’s volunteer restoration in Musser & Jarvis Creek were spread out up to the wilderness boundary. In addition, 3,000 tree seedlings were planted throughout the non-wilderness section of the Musser & Jarvis watershed! The seedlings were Jeffery Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Sugar Pine and Incense Cedar.

The waddles and tree chinking both survived the winter with no damage. There is still very little green in the watershed, with a few exceptions:
For those of you who participated on last fall’s last day, you may remember a last ditch effort to get seed down by dragging rakes and spreading seed as we walked out…even that was apparently successful. We can only hope the new sprouts survive the summer.
As you may be aware, the Alpine Watershed Group along with the Forest Service has planned two (2) community volunteer Tree Planting Workdays on April 9th and May 1st.
We will be planting within the Tamarack Fire burn scar, and due to restrictions on the number of volunteers allowed, RSVP is required. Each workday will include a family-friendly site. – Alpine Watershed Group

This morning we posted that Saturday’s meeting will take place at the Alpine Co. Library at 270 Laramie Street in Markleeville at 8:30 a.m., HOWEVER, that is NO LONGER the case.
Per Alpine Co. Public Health (just a little bit after we posted up this morning’s heads up) public meetings are no longer allowed due to the surge in Covid cases within the county.
Here’s this weekend’s agenda, but again, attendance will only be by Zoom; there will be no one meeting at the library.
Qualified Persons may attend any MWC meeting but the meetings will now be via Zoom until further notice.

We hope you had a great Christmas holiday and that you and yours are happy, healthy and safe.
As we kick off the new year we wanted to let everyone know that your participation and experience is ALWAYS welcome.
At our last meeting, at which by the way Becky Thornburg was elected as vice-president of the Board (congrats and thank you Becky!), we discussed MWC’s need for continued volunteerism.
Many of you helped out during our wateshed restoration and for that we are grateful. We wanted to mention, though, that continued help and participation is welcome and needed.
Perhaps you have expertise in areas such as engineering, plumbing, heavy equipment, electrical, construction, communication, or something else that could be of benefit to MWC or Alpine Co.?
If you’d like to help out, or just learn more about your water company, join us at one of our meetings.
All meetings are held on the third Saturday of the month, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. and while they are not open to the entire public, they are open to all members and those with a membership interest (for more on those terms, check out our bylaws on our Important Documents page).
The regular board meetings take place on the first month of the quarter (i.e. Jan., April, July and October), and are held BOTH in-person and via Zoom.
Our special call meetings, held on the second and third months of the quarters, are held via Zoom only, and are typically shorter than the regular board meetings.

Thanks to our intrepid volunteers, including locals, Nevadans, CalFire and Ca Conservation Corp members, we had a successful three (3) days of restoration.
Each of the three (3) days brought us approximately 30 volunteers, who focused on seeding the slopes, and chinking trees, in the watershed, in order to lessen the effects of erosion and mitigate debris flowing into the creek. Editors note: The image at the top of this post is only of one crew, this particular troup was on site last Sunday.
Chinking? You ask…I (Mark) had not heard the term before last Sunday but based on what I can tell it is derived from log cabin building and the filling in of the spaces between the logs with a mortar of some sort.
As it relates to erosion mitigation it’s about filling in the upslope side of a felled tree (felled parallel to the creek) with rocks and dirt in order to capture sediment and re-direct water flow.
A special shout out to the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce and its Tamarack Fire Assistance Fund. It was that fund that allowed us to purchase the wattles and the seed.
Andy Lovell, and the Alpine Trails Association, helped out with tools expertise.
Mary Young, our President, and the First Gentleman, Bill Young, also deserve a shout out. They spent countless hours doing reconnaissance on the watershed, developing the plan and most importantly “herding the cats” to get the work done.
We should also mention Kimra and Sierra, from the Alpine Watershed Group. Their expertise and direction was such a plus!
The BIGGEST shout out, however, goes to you, dear volunteer. We wish we could name you all but the post would be too long if we did.
WE ARE SO THANKFUL! The Water Co., and the community as a whole, is lucky to have you.

This weekend we’ll be laying wattles, and seeding the area, around the Musser & Jarvis watershed (which supplies Markleeville’s water) to help restore burn areas from the Tamarack Fire.
If you’re a MWC Member this is a great opportunity for you to learn more about the watershed that serves your water needs and more importantly, it’s a chance for you to contribute to the ongoing health of your watershed.
